Compare two channels of ball progression while preserving current metric definitions, role, opportunity, unit and population context.

Carrying and passing progression can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable evidence or an automatic combined player rating.
Ball progression can happen through carrying and passing, but the two channels are not interchangeable. They involve different actions, opportunities and role demands.
FBPlot’s current catalog includes Progressive Carries. For passing progression, always use the exact live label and definition shown in the Metrics Glossary rather than assuming a provider-independent meaning.
Begin With Definitions
For both metrics, record:
- exact current label;
- action definition;
- unit;
- supported normalisation;
- period;
- relevant exclusions.
Do not write “progressive actions” as if a simple sum were a canonical metric unless you explicitly define that sum.
Ask a Relationship Question
A defensible scatter question is:
Among eligible midfielders in the selected competitions and period, how do the recorded passing-progression and carrying-progression measures relate?
This asks about observed values. It does not decide which player is the best progresser.
Define a Role Population
Mixing all positions may cause the scatter to reproduce role differences. Choose a population relevant to the task and record:
- competitions;
- position or role group;
- period and cutoff;
- minutes or matches rule;
- unit.

Keep the Axes Separate
Use one progression channel on X and the other on Y. This preserves the trade-off:
- high on both;
- more pass-led;
- more carry-led;
- low recorded volume on both.
Summing the two removes that distinction. If a composite is required, follow the transparent composite-axis method and disclose the formula.
Check Opportunity
Progression volume can depend on:
- team possession;
- starting zones;
- build-up responsibility;
- opposition pressure;
- tactical instruction;
- minutes;
- game state.
Per-90 rates address exposure time but not these structural opportunities.
Investigate Quadrants, Not Labels
Quadrants can organise follow-up:
- high passing and high carrying;
- high passing and lower carrying;
- lower passing and high carrying;
- lower recorded volume on both.
The boundaries are editorial or statistical choices. State whether they are medians, fixed benchmarks or another documented rule. Do not call a quadrant “elite” without a validated definition.
Add Minutes as Context
If bubble size is used, minutes can help expose sample differences at the same player-season grain. Keep the underlying minutes value available and remember that area is read less precisely than axis position.
Use the small-sample workflow before highlighting low-minute outliers.
Follow With Profile Evidence
A scatter identifies combinations worth investigating. Use a player bar or radar to inspect complementary role metrics, then video or other evidence to understand how the actions occurred.

One Player Can Progress the Ball in Unequal Ways
Florian Wirtz's FBPlot profile keeps completed passes, carries and progressive carries on separate rows. That is valuable because “progression” is not one action waiting to be combined. A player can advance possession through movement with the ball, through passing, or through a role that creates space for someone else to do either.
The chart should prompt a match question. Are the carries beginning in transition, against a settled block or after receiving between lines? Are completed passes moving the defence or simply recycling possession? The numerical rows identify where to look; they do not supply the tactical explanation.
This also argues against a single “progression score.” Adding carries and passes can hide a meaningful role difference and can mix provider definitions that use different distance or zone rules. Plot the two channels on separate axes first. If a composite is later useful, disclose its components and show the baseline view so the reader can see what the combination removed.
A scatter makes the role patterns easier to discuss. The upper-right quadrant may contain players who progress through both channels; the upper-left may favour carriers; the lower-right may favour passers. Those are descriptive regions, not automatic role labels. A full-back and an attacking midfielder can occupy the same quadrant for very different tactical reasons.
Add touches or team possession as context before calling one route more efficient. A player with far more opportunities may accumulate progression without taking unusual responsibility, while a lower-volume player may advance a larger share of his team's possessions. The chart should make that next denominator visible rather than declaring a winner between passing and carrying.
Build the Comparison
